Coin Appraisals in Austin
Free, expert coin appraisals with no obligation to sell. Every evaluation includes a full explanation of what you have and what drives its value.
(737) 200-7042A coin appraisal answers a direct question: what is this actually worth in today’s market? Not a family estimate, not a number from years ago. It is a careful examination of metal content, condition, and current collector demand compared against recent market data from established numismatic references and auction records.
Austin Coin Buyers provides free appraisals because informed sellers make better decisions. Most sellers who receive an accurate appraisal choose to transact with us. We have no incentive to understate value at the appraisal stage. We want you to know exactly what you have so you can make a confident decision.

What a Real Appraisal Involves
A genuine coin appraisal starts with authentication: is this coin what it appears to be? For common material, this is straightforward. For valuable coins including key date Morgans, high-grade gold, and potential error coins, authentication involves careful examination of design details, die characteristics, and metal properties. We use proper lighting, magnification, and reference materials.
Grading follows authentication. We assign a grade reflecting the coin’s preservation: how much of the original design detail remains, what surface disturbances exist, and whether the coin shows any evidence of cleaning or damage. For uncertified coins, we grade conservatively, recognizing that PCGS or NGC might assign a slightly different grade.
Market comparison is the final step. We reference the PCGS Price Guide, the CDN Greysheet which reflects actual dealer bid prices, and recent auction results from Heritage and Stack’s Bowers to establish current market value. Coin prices fluctuate significantly. A price from five years ago may differ substantially from today’s market.
The difference between a retail replacement value and actual sale value is important for insurance purposes. Retail replacement, what you would pay to buy the same coin from a dealer, is typically 30 to 50 percent higher than what a dealer would pay you. Both valuations are legitimate depending on the purpose. We can provide either type of documentation when needed.

A few coins takes 10 to 15 minutes. A collection of 50 to 100 coins typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. A large collection of 500 or more coins may take 60 to 90 minutes or longer. For very large estates, we schedule a dedicated appointment. Call ahead if you have a substantial collection.
Absolutely not. You can bring your coins, receive a full evaluation and written offer, and leave without selling. We do not apply pressure. Take the offer home, think about it, get other opinions, and decide when you are ready. The appraisal is yours to keep either way.
In our context, these are essentially the same thing. The appraisal tells you what your coins are worth; the offer tells you what we will pay. Because we are a buyer rather than a fee-based appraiser, our appraisal is always framed as a purchase offer. For insurance or estate purposes where you need a formal value independent of what we would pay, we can discuss separate written documentation.
Yes. We can provide written appraisals for insurance replacement value documentation. Insurance appraisals should reflect what it would cost to replace the item in the current market, which may be higher than what we would pay to purchase it. Call to discuss your specific needs.
Yes. You do not have to intend to sell to receive a free appraisal. Many Austin collectors bring coins for evaluation to understand their collection's current value for estate planning, insurance, or personal knowledge. We evaluate everything the same way regardless of whether you intend to sell.
Yes. Our appraisals cover paper currency including old US bills, silver certificates, gold certificates, and national bank notes, gold and silver bullion bars and rounds, as well as coins. If it is part of a numismatic collection or estate, we can evaluate it.
