What a Free Appraisal Includes

A free buying appraisal is a complete evaluation of your coins and a written offer for our purchase price. It covers every piece you bring in and includes the following.

Authentication Check

We verify each coin is genuine before any pricing discussion. Counterfeit detection is part of every evaluation at no charge.

Metal Spot Calculation

For bullion coins and pre-1964 silver, we calculate the current melt value based on live spot prices and confirm the metal content of your specific coins.

Numismatic Assessment

Collector coins, key dates, and certified coins receive a full numismatic evaluation referencing published price guides and recent auction data.

Written Itemized Offer

You receive a written breakdown showing exactly what we offer for each category or significant coin. This is not a verbal estimate. It is a document you keep.

Free Appraisal vs. Certified Appraisal

There are two kinds of coin appraisals with completely different purposes. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right path.

Free Buying Appraisal

Certified Appraisal

What it is

Cost

$75 to $250 or more per hour depending on collection size

Best for

Insurance documentation, estate valuation, legal disputes, divorce proceedings, charitable donations

Limitations

Takes days to weeks, costs money upfront, may not reflect what a dealer would actually pay

Inherited a Coin Collection? Start Here.

Inherited coin collections are among the most common appraisals we perform. Most heirs do not know much about coins and are understandably cautious. Here is the right sequence of steps before you do anything with an inherited collection.

  1. 1

Resist the urge to clean anything. Even gentle polishing damages original coin surfaces and can reduce value by 50 to 90 percent.

  2. 2

Keep coins in their current holders. If they are in an album, leave them in the album. If some are in envelopes or rolls, leave them there.

  3. 3

Take photos of any coins that look unusual, large, heavy, or different from the rest.

  4. 4

Call us at (737) 200-7042 before bringing everything in. A quick description helps us prepare and advise you on whether to schedule extended time.

  5. 5

Bring the collection in for a sit-down appraisal. We walk through everything systematically and explain what we find.

The most important rule: Do not clean anything before getting an appraisal. We see cleaned coins regularly, and in almost every case, the seller was trying to help and ended up reducing the value. The original surface of a coin is irreplaceable. An honest appraisal before any action is always the right first step.

What to Expect at Your Appraisal

When you arrive at our Austin location on Smith Road, a buyer will greet you and ask about what you have brought in. There is no formal intake process. Bring your coins to the counter and we get started.

We evaluate coins on the counter in front of you. You can watch, ask questions, and take notes throughout. Our buyers explain what they are seeing and how it affects the offer as they work through your material.

When the evaluation is complete, we prepare a written offer. You are free to take as long as you need to review it. If you have questions, we answer them. If you want to think about it overnight, take the offer with you and come back. We honor written offers for 48 hours.

If you accept, we pay immediately. If you decline, we hand back your coins and thank you for coming in. Either way, there is no pressure and no charge.

Appraisal Questions Answered

Time depends on the size of your collection. A handful of coins typically takes 10 to 15 minutes. A full album takes 30 to 60 minutes. For large estate collections, we may schedule a dedicated 2 to 3 hour block. Call ahead if you have a large amount to ensure we have adequate time.

Yes. The appraisal is free regardless of whether you sell. We evaluate coins for free because it creates the opportunity to make a purchase. There is no obligation to sell, and there is no fee if you decline our offer and leave with your coins.

Our free buying appraisals are not legal documents suitable for insurance or estate filing. For those purposes, you need a certified appraisal from a credentialed numismatic appraiser. We can provide a referral if you need that service. Our written offer document shows what we would pay, which is typically lower than insurance replacement value.

We can give you a general range over the phone based on your description. However, we cannot provide a firm written offer without seeing the coins in person. Photos help, but in-person evaluation catches details that photos miss, including surface quality, original luster, cleaning, and die varieties that can significantly affect value.

For large or difficult-to-transport collections, ask about our at-home appraisal option. Our buyers can come to you when the collection warrants it. Call (737) 200-7042 to discuss.
